Attending one of our Loadstar Tankerman Academy information sessions is the first step to becoming a Loadstar Tankerman!

The information session will give you an overview of the program, covering topics such as admissions requirements, tuition and financing options, course information and in-the-field training instruction. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions, meet members of the Loadstar team and find out what it means to be part of the next generation in product handling services.

There is no charge to attend the session, but you must pre-register to attend. Space is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

What is the role of a Tankerman?

Tankermen play a vital role in our nation’s economic and national security.  Tankermen are certified under regulations issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. They serve as the Vessel Person-in-Charge (PIC) and are responsible for the safe transfer of refined products, chemicals, and liquified gases to and from marine vessels.

Do I need any experience to be accepted into the Loadstar Tankerman Academy?

No experience is required to qualify for LTA. However, industry experience and mechanical skills are helpful in learning how to become a tankerman.

Will I get paid while attending the course?

Yes. While you are enrolled in LTA, you will be paid $18/hr as well as mileage for each job. Students will also be eligible for all employee benefits.

How many applicants are accepted for the program?

Each class is limited to no more than 20 students. 

How long does this course last?

LTA is a 5-month course.

How is the course structured?

The course is separated into two parts – classroom instruction and field training. The classroom segment consists of 6 days spread throughout the five-month course, with the field training filling up the remainder of the time.

When I graduate from LTA, will I meet all requirements and certifications to be a Tankerman?

Graduation from LTA fully qualifies you to receive your Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) from the United States Coast Guard.  Upon receipt of your MMC you are immediately eligible to begin work as a licensed tankerman.
