Admissions Process
Students must follow the admissions process to enroll in the next Loadstar Tankerman Academy session. With the limited class size and current demand for instruction, students must adhere to all deadlines, supply all documents and meet all requirements listed in a timely manner.

- 3. Meet with the interview team
- 4. From the interviews, candidates are selected to participate in the academy
Admission Requirements
This course is open to all students who meet the following requirements:
- Be 18 years or older and legally able to work in the U.S.
- Be capable of speaking and understanding, in English all instructions needed to commence, conduct, and complete a transfer
- Be capable of reading English found in the Declaration of Inspection, vessel response plans, and Cargo Information Cards
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Have or be qualified to receive a valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
- Eligible to receive a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) upon completion of the training
- Each student should have the ability to pass a criminal background check. Accepted students will also need to pass a USCG physical examination (46 CFR, Part 10, Subpart C), along with drug and alcohol screening. Candidates must report for testing as soon as possible following the request. Failure to report for testing when requested or a positive drug or alcohol test result will eliminate the candidate from consideration. All potential students also must be able to meet 46 CFR, Part 13, Subpart C upon completion of the course.
Course Completion Requirements
- To successfully complete this course, each candidate must obtain a grade percentage of not less than 70% on all examinations and successfully complete each practical demonstration.
- All homework assignments, exercises, and tests must be completed and returned to the instructor for credit.
- A course completion certificate will not be issued if the course requirements are not fully met.

The information session will give you an overview of the program, covering topics such as admissions requirements, tuition and financing options, course information and in-the-field training instruction. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions, meet members of the Loadstar team and find out what it means to be part of the next generation in product handling services.
There is no charge to attend the session, but you must pre-register to attend. Space is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tankermen play a vital role in our nation’s economic and national security. Tankermen are certified under regulations issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. They serve as the Vessel Person-in-Charge (PIC) and are responsible for the safe transfer of refined products, chemicals, and liquified gases to and from marine vessels.
No experience is required to qualify for LTA. However, industry experience and mechanical skills are helpful in learning how to become a tankerman.

Yes. While you are enrolled in LTA, you will be paid $18/hr as well as mileage for each job. Students will also be eligible for all employee benefits.
Each class is limited to no more than 20 students.
LTA is a 5-month course.
The course is separated into two parts – classroom instruction and field training. The classroom segment consists of 6 days spread throughout the five-month course, with the field training filling up the remainder of the time.
Graduation from LTA fully qualifies you to receive your Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) from the United States Coast Guard. Upon receipt of your MMC you are immediately eligible to begin work as a licensed tankerman.
