Beginning August 2024, Loadstar introduced Virtual Reality (VR) training to its Coast Guard-approved Tankerman Academy. “VR enhances our ability to train students from scratch on how to become a licensed tankerman,” said Brett Murray, Vice President of Marine Operations, adding “We are committed to offering the finest tankerman training in the industry.”
Loadstar teamed with Industrial Maritime Academy to develop the technology. Toby Frausto, Industrial Maritime Academy President, stated “Partnering with Loadstar allows their trainees to actually see barge interiors and pipeline systems. This marks a significant advancement in maritime training, and positions Loadstar at the forefront of industry innovation.”
Tankerman training has historically relied heavily on field training, with some classroom mixed in. “Marine VR allows us to introduce students to what it’s like to be a tankerman in a controlled environment,” said Stephen Williams, Loadstar’s Director of Operational Excellence. “Students better understand what to do, and how to do it safely, before they ever set foot on an actual barge,” he added.
The technology takes students through each step in the complex barge loading and unloading process, allowing them to practice actual moves and build muscle memory. VR can present emergency situations, allowing students to practice a safe response.
“Using innovation and technology to improve our service is one of our core values” says Loadstar CEO Brian Haymon. “We are proud to add VR to the value we bring to our customers.”
